There is a price war in Philippine bookkeeping, and it is being won by whoever quotes lowest. That is not a complaint about competition. It is a description of where the fee has landed and what the fee can no longer pay for.

Below a certain number, nobody is doing the work. They are keeping up appearances until something arrives.

A bookkeeper who wins a client at ₱500 a month has bought an obligation they cannot service. The entries get thinner. Filings slip. A return goes in on time with figures nobody has reconciled, because reconciling them was never in the price.

None of that shows up for a year, sometimes two. It shows up when the BIR asks a question the books cannot answer.

And when it does, the bill does not go to whoever quoted lowest. It goes to the taxpayer, who chose on price, and to the bookkeeper, who now has to explain records they were never paid enough to keep.

The ladder

Four quotes for the same work.

₱10,000What the work costs when it is done properly.
₱5,000Still viable, if the client list is small and clean.
₱2,000Below the cost of the hours the work actually takes.
₱500Wins the client. Cannot pay for the work.

The client signs the bottom rung. Everyone in the room already knows which one they would have to quote to win.

Any one of these can arrive on a set of books that were cheap to keep.

One room, two sides of the same invoice

The day is built around these questions.

If you keep the books

  • What do the hours actually cost you, and what are you absorbing when the fee does not cover them?
  • Which parts of the work quietly stop happening first when a fee is too low?
  • When a notice lands on a client you underpriced, what is your exposure and what is theirs?
  • How do you raise a fee with a client who has been paying the old one for years?

If you own the business

  • What does the cheapest quote leave undone, and how would you know before a notice arrives?
  • Which records does the BIR actually ask for, and can yours answer?
  • What are you buying when you pay more, in terms you can check?
  • What does it cost to repair books after the fact, against keeping them properly from the start?

Before the seminar

If a Subpoena Duces Tecum has already arrived, Unquestionable Compliance is the checklist for that particular morning. The seminar is about not getting there.
